Alvin Schexnider is a service designer, people operations leader, equity designer and illustrator. His work aims to help civic institutions become more effective, citizen & employee-centered, innovative, and equitable. Previously, Alvin served as an Adjunct Professor of Equity & Community Design at Loyola University Chicago and Director of Operations at Greater Good Studio.
Service design
Alvin currently serves as the Chief People Officer for the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), one of Illinois' largest agencies with over 14,000 employees. IDHS assists its customers to achieve self-sufficiency, independence and health through integrated services for individuals, families and communities. Outside of work, Alvin’s projects include Distributive Designers, an illustration series spotlighting black designers who are doing social, participatory, community, and equity-focused work.
Pandemic project
Challenged by the difficult year of 2020, Alvin conceived of and designed the Racial DeckEquity Cards over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January 202. The Racial DeckEquity is a card set to help operationalize racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations across nine different administrative functions.
